An SMS 2003 management point is not rolled back to a previous state after you remove a management point hotfix

SYMPTOMS

When you remove a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Management Point hotfix from an SMS 2003 site server, the hotfix files may not be replaced with earlier versions of the same files. When this problem occurs, the SMS 2003 management point computer cannot be rolled back to a previous state.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the previous file versions are older than the SMS 2003 management point hotfix files, and the previous files cannot overwrite the newer hotfix files. In this case, the previous files are only reinstalled when the destination file is older or missing.

Installation instructions

Note This hotfix is a prerequisite that must be installed before you remove any management point hotfixes. This hotfix enables the previous files to overwrite the more recent hotfix files when you remove an SMS 2003 management point hotfix. If an SMS 2003 management point hotfix is removed before you install this hotfix, the SMS 2003 management point must be removed and then reinstalled.

To install this hotfix, follow these steps:

Create a shared folder in a location that is available to your SMS site servers.
Copy the SMS2003-RTM-KB885438-X86-ENU.exe hotfix file to the new shared folder.
On each SMS 2003 primary and secondary site server in your environment, log on by using an account that has administrative credentials. Close the SMS Administrator window if it is open.
On each primary and secondary site server, connect to the shared folder that contains the hotfix, double-click the SMS2003-RTM-KB885438-X86-ENU.exe file, and then follow the instructions in the wizard.
