SYMPTOMS

When you use an automatic configuration script to set up allowed sites for the Trusted sites zone in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, the automatic configuration script overwrites and replaces all user-added sites.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the appropriate service pack or hotfix that is described in this article. If you obtain the hotfix, after you apply it, you must also enable it by following the steps in the "Enable the hotfix" section.

Note In Internet Explorer 6 in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), all user-added trusted sites are merged with the sites that are specified in an automatic configuration script. This hotfix provides the same functionality for Internet Explorer 6 and for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in Microsoft Windows XP, in Windows XP SP1, in Windows 2000, and in Windows NT 4.0.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Enable the hotfix

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

After you apply this hotfix, follow these steps to enable the functionality that is provided by this hotfix.
1.Quit Internet Explorer.
2.Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
4.On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
5.Type FEATURE_DO_NOT_DELETE_ZONES_INFO_DURING_BRAND_KB885838, and then press ENTER.
6.With the new subkey you created in steps 4 and 5 selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
7.Type an asterisk character (*), and then press ENTER.

Note An asterisk indicates that you want all programs to use this hotfix. If you want to enable the feature only for Internet Explorer, type iexplore.exe instead of an asterisk.
8.Right-click the asterisk character, and then click Modify.
9.In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
10.Quit Registry Editor.
