SYMPTOMS

When you try to modify an embedded e-mail message that was forwarded as an attachment by a server-side rule in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you receive the following warning message when you try to save the changes:
Your changes could not be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of this item in the default folder for the item?
If you use a program that tries to modify attachments to e-mail messages, such as a mail archival program, the program cannot modify an embedded e-mail message that was forwarded as an attachment by a server-side rule. When the attempt to modify the embedded e-mail message fails, a MAPI_E_ACCESS_DENIED error is returned. This problem occurs even though the MAPI_MODIFY parameter is set when the program uses the IMAPIProp::OpenProperty method to access the PR_ATTACH_DATA_OBJ property.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because when an e-mail message is forwarded as an attachment by a server-side rule, the embedded e-mail message is considered read-only. The embedded e-mail message is considered read-only because the MSGFLAG_SUBMIT property is set on the attachment.

RESOLUTION

This hotfix has the following prerequisites:

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer after you install this hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and its dependent services are automatically restarted during the hotfix installation.
