SYMPTOMS

When you modify the properties of a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site address in the SMS Administrator Console, you receive a blank error message, and you cannot modify the site address properties.

CAUSE

This problem will occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The unattended installation method was used to install the site that you want to modify the site address for.
  • The site that you want to modify the site address for has a site name that has a length of more than 50 characters.
  • You use the SMS Administrator Console to modify the properties of the site address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

When you run the SMS 2003 Setup program interactively, the SMS 2003 Setup program limits site names to a maximum length of 50 characters. When you use an unattended installation method to install an SMS 2003 site, the SMS 2003 Setup program does not verify that the site name that is assigned to the site is 50 characters or less in length. The SMS 2003 Administrator Console cannot modify address properties for a site when the combination of the site code and site name causes a string of characters that is more than 56 characters in length.
