64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP do not appear in the supported platforms list in Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You cannot use the program properties to limit advertised programs to 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP in the original release version of Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 or SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The This program can run only on the specified client platforms area on the Requirements tab of the program properties does not list any 64-bit operating systems. Additionally, the SMS Advanced Client Upgrade package definition file (.pdf) does not list any 64-bit operating systems.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Systems Management Server 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

You must have SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to install this hotfix.

Restart requirement

This hotfix will stop and then restart the following services:
  • SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER
  • SMS_EXECUTIVE
  • SMS_SQL_MONITOR

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. Installation information

You must manually run a SQL Server update script after you install this hotfix. To install this hotfix and run the update script, follow these steps on each SMS 2003 site server in your hierarchy.
Install the hotfix
  1. Copy the Sms2003-sp1-kb886197-x86-enu.exe file to a local folder on the site server or to a shared network folder.
  2. On the SMS site server computer, open the local folder or the shared network folder that contains the Sms2003-sp1-kb886197-x86-enu.exe file.
  3. Double-click the Sms2003-sp1-kb886197-x86-enu.exe file to start the hotfix installation wizard.
Stop SMS services
  1. On the SMS site server computer, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Stop the SMS_EXECUTIVE and the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER services.
Run the SQL Server update script
  1. On the SMS site database server, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Query Analyzer.
  2. If you are prompted to do this, connect to the SQL Server, and then click OK.
  3. On the File menu, click Open, and then locate the \SMS\Logs\KB886197 folder.
  4. Click Update.sql, and then click Open.
  5. On the Query menu, click Change Database.
  6. Click the SMS database, and then click OK.
  7. On the Query menu, click Execute.
  8. On the SMS site server computer, start the SMS_EXECUTIVE and the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected In Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix updates the package definition file to add support for 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. This hotfix also updates the supported platforms list in the package properties to include 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. After you install this hotfix and run the Update.sql script, the following options are added to the supported platforms list in the program properties:
  • All IA64 Windows Server 2003
  • All x64 Windows Server 2003
  • All x64 Windows XP Professional
  • IA64 Windows Server 2003 SP1
  • x64 Windows Server 2003 SP1
  • x64 Windows XP Professional SP1
