You receive an "An error occurred while accessing domain information" error message when you install Windows Small Business Server 2003 Server tools and configure Component Messages

If you upgrade a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based domain controller to Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, the SBS 2003 Setup program fails during installation of the Server Tools component. When this occurs, the following message appears in the Component Messages window:Additionally, the following error messages are located in the Errorlog.txt file that is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs:

This issue may occur if the Display Identifiers object cannot be located in Active Directory. The logged error 80072030 indicates that the object was not found when the Windows Small Business Server Setup program searched for specific display specifiers.

To resolve this issue, you can perform a system state backup, and then import the display specifiers into Active Directory by using the csvde command-line tool. To do this, follow these steps:

Note You should only follow these steps if you receive the exact error message in the Errorlog.txt file that is described in the Symptoms section.

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
   
   csvde -i -f %windir%\system32\mui\dispspec\dcpromo.csv -c DOMAINPLACEHOLDER domain distinguished name (DN) -j %windir%\debug -k
   
   Notes
   • Replace domain distinguished name (DN) in the command with the DN of the domain, such as dc=domain_name,dc=local.
   • DOMAINPLACEHOLDER is a constant in the command line. For example, you must type the word DOMAINPLACEHOLDER exactly as it appears in the command.
   • This command is also visible in the Dcpromohelp.log file, without the -k option. Therefore, you can view the command in this file as a reference. You can also copy the command from the Dcpromohelp.log file and then paste it in step 2, with the addition of the -k option. The -k option means "ignore object already exists errors."
   • This command imports all the objects from the Dcpromo.csv file to Active Directory, if the objects are not already present.
   • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server may work correctly even though there may be no Exchange Properties in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in when the following are true:
     1. Exchange 2000 Server is installed on a member server
     2. the Exchange System Management Tool is not installed on the domain controller
     3. You run the csvde command to add display specifiers
     To work around the display problem, run the Exchange 2000 Setup program with the /forestprep parameter.
