SYMPTOMS

After you start Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7, you cannot shut down as expected. This problem also occurs if you try to log off your computer. You may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Logout has timed out because the application Virtual PC failed to quit. To try again, quit Virtual PC and choose Log Out from the Apple menu.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following is true:
  • You clicked Save PC's State when you shut down a virtual machine, and the process is not complete.
  • An active Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 virtual machine is minimized in the dock.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Let the save process complete

After the process to save the state of the virtual image is complete, click Shut Down or Log Out on the Apple menu.

Method 2: Quit the Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 virtual machine

To quit an active virtual machine, follow these steps:
  1. Click the virtual machine icon in the dock.
  2. On the PC menu, click Shut Down.
  3. Click a shutdown option, and then click one of the following:
    • Save State
    • Shut Down
    • Turn Off
