When you use a Secure Digital storage device with Windows XP, or a Flash Media Device such as MS/MSPRO/xD, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The Volumes tab for your device is not populated.
  • You may receive the following error (Event ID 3023) in Event Viewer, which means that the Logical Disk Manager (LDM) cannot manage the drive:
The Logical Disk Manager Service failed while registering for device handle notifications on device %1. Win32 Error: %2
  • Since the Logical Device Manager cannot manage the drive, you cannot populate the Volumes tab, and the device is not reported as a drive in the Disk Management console.

This problem may occur if the storage device is connected by using an integrated SDIO (Secure Digital Input/Output) expansion slot, by using an add-on SDIO PCI card, or by using expandable flash media.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

The drive will show up correctly under My Computer and does not affect the operation of the storage device. Logical Disk Manager will not be able to manage the drive when used on the Microsoft products listed in the "Applies To" section.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Connect an external storage device.
  2. Open Device Manager, right-click the device under Disk Drives, and then click Properties. The Properties dialog box for the device opens.
  3. Click Populate on the Volumes tab.
  4. No information about the device is listed.
