SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, you install or remove a software program. When you restart the computer and then try to connect to a remote server, you may not be able to connect to the remote server, and the Workstation service may stop. If you try to start the Workstation service, you may receive the following message:
Error 1364: A specified authentication package is unknown

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Authentication Packages registry entry is missing in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
When you install or remove certain software programs, the programs may remove the Authentication Packages registry entry during the installation or removal process.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, create the Authentication Packages registry entry by using Registry Editor. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.
  4. Type Authentication Packages, and then press ENTER.
  5. Double-click Authentication Packages.
  6. In the Value data list, type msv1_0, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

You may also receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section if the NetLogon service is not started. For example, you may receive this error message if the start mode is set to Manual instead of the default Automatic setting.
