MS07-034: Cumulative security update for Outlook Express and for Windows Mail
The security update corrects the following problems in Microsoft Outlook Express. Symptom 1When you use Outlook Express to send an e-mail message to a specific recipient in your address book, the e-mail message is delivered correctly. However, the subject line of the received message is empty, and the body of the message contains header information. Sometimes, the message may contain recipients that were included in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field of the message. For example, if the e-mail message is sent by using Plain Text format, the message is received with header information that resembles the following in the body of the message: >, Cc:"recipient name" <recipient e-mail address > Bcc: "recipient name" <recipient e-mail address > Subject: original subject line Date: Date and Time MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180 Body of message. >, Cc:"recipient name" <recipient e-mail address > Bcc: "recipient name" <recipient e-mail address > Subject: original subject line Date: Date and Time MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0049_01C4C59F.4318FEC0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0049_01C4C59F.4318FEC0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Body of message. ------=_NextPart_000_0049_01C4C59F.4318FEC0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2900.2523" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2> Body of = message.</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV></BODY></HTML> ------=_NextPart_000_0049_01C4C59F.4318FEC0— This issue can occur if the specific recipient entry in your address is corrupted. For example, the issue may occur if the address for the entry contains a line carriage character. Therefore, BCC information appears in the body of the message. Resolution 1To resolve this problem, follow the instructions in the "Summary" section to install security update MS07-034. By default, the fix for this problem is disabled after you install this update. To have us enable this fix for you, go to the “Fix it for me” section. If you would rather enable this fix yourself, go to the “Let me fix it myself” section. Fix it for meTo enable this fix automatically, click the Fix this problem link. Then, click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in this wizard.Note this wizard may be in English only; however, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows. Note If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD, and then you can run it on the computer that has the problem. Now go to the "Did this fix the problem?" section. Let me fix it myselfImportant This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Symptom 2Assume that you configure Outlook Express to break apart e-mail messages that are larger than a specific size. For example, you specify 60 kilobytes (KB) in the Break apart messages larger than option in the Properties dialog box for the e-mail account. When you use Outlook Express to send an e-mail message that is larger than 60 KB, the e-mail message is sent as a multipart message. If you have also included e-mail recipients in the BCC field of the e-mail message, e-mail recipients who are listed in the To field or in the CC field of the multipart e-mail message may be able to view the e-mail recipients who are listed in the BCC field. This behavior occurs if the e-mail recipients who are listed in the To or CC fields copy the e-mail message to the desktop, and then use Notepad to open the e-mail message. Resolution 2To resolve this problem, follow the instructions in the "Summary" section to install security update MS07-034. By default, the fix for this problem is enabled after you install this update. If the fix causes problems, go to the “Fix it for me” section to have us disable this fix for you. Symptom 4When you use the Microsoft Collaboration Data Object (CDO) to filter e-mail on a Microsoft Exchange server, a corrupted e-mail message on the server may cause an infinite loop when the CDO processes the message. This behavior may cause the CPU usage that is displayed in Task Manager to approach 100 percent. The CDO libraries use interfaces that are included in Outlook Express for data collection and for parsing.

Symptom 5When you use a custom program, such as a backup program, that uses Simple MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) for e-mail notification, the notifications may stop after the program tries to send a Simple MAPI command. This problem occurs because Simple MAPI has stopped responding. The program may still function correctly. However, it cannot send e-mail notifications.
Note By default, the Simple MAPI service provider in Microsoft Windows 2000, in Windows XP, and in Windows Server 2003 is Outlook Express. For more information about Simple MAPI, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms529053.aspx
