Duplicate e-mail messages are downloaded from a POP3 e-mail server in Outlook 2002

SYMPTOMS

If you download your e-mail messages from a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) e-mail server in Microsoft Outlook 2002, and then you download the e-mail messages a second time, duplicate e-mail messages may be downloaded.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the Leave a copy of messages on the server option is enabled.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Outlook 2002 post-Service Pack 3 Hotfix Package that is dated October 25, 2004. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Important note The first time that you download your e-mail messages from a POP3 e-mail server after you install this hotfix, you may still receive duplicate e-mail messages. However, this problem is resolved with each subsequent download thereafter.
