Article ID: 888444 - Last Review: November 2, 2007 - Revision: 3.4 FIX: You receive a 17883 error in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 or in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a when a worker thread becomes stuck in a registry call Bug #: 472962 (SQL Server 8.0) Bug #: 472963 (SQL Server 8.0) On This PageArticle contentsSUMMARYThis article
describes the following about this hotfix release:
SYMPTOMS You may receive a 17883 error message in Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack
3a (SP3a)
when a worker thread becomes stuck in a registry call. When the error occurs, SQL Server generates an associated mini-dump. When you review the mini-dump, you will see a stack that is similar to the following: NTDLL!NtOpenKey+0xb ADVAPI32!LocalBaseRegOpenKey ADVAPI32!RegOpenKeyExW sqlservr!CServerHeartbeat::UpdateUptimeRegKey sqlservr!CServerHeartbeat::OnHeartbeat For a list of previous hotfixes, see the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 290211

How to obtain the latest SQL Server 2000 service pack
CAUSEThis
problem occurs more frequently on larger installations during processing
periods that produce more physical I/O burden on the overall system. One of
the key worker threads in SQL Server 2000 SP3 is the heartbeat task. The heartbeat task was added in SQL
Server 2000 SP3. The heartbeat task updates the registry every 60 seconds. The heartbeat task can
become wedged in the registry call. If that occurs, the UMS scheduler that the task is assigned
to also becomes wedged. When the UMS scheduler is wedged, no more queries or connections can be processed on the scheduler until the worker
completes the registry call and returns control to SQL
Server. RESOLUTIONService pack informationTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:290211
