Symptoms

When you view the public folder limits on the Exchange System Manager console in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the Exchange System Manager console may not display the actual public folder limits that are enforced by the Information Store service.

Note To view the correct public folder limits, use the Pfdavadmin tool.

More information

After you apply this hotfix, the following behavior is true of public folders:
  • The following settings are the default settings for a new public folder:
    Collapse this tableExpand this table
    OptionValue
    Issue Warning at (KB)no limit
Prohibit Post at (KB)Use public store defaults
Maximum item size (KB)Use public store defaults
You can see these settings in the Pfdavadmin tool. However, Exchange System Manager cannot display the settings correctly because they are a combination of the no limit value and the Use public store defaults value. Instead, Exchange System Manager displays all three attributes as empty. This behavior suggests that the attribute values are set to no limit.
  • The hotfix is written with the assumption that the default settings are in line with the intentions of most administrators even if the settings are not displayed correctly in Exchange System Manager. Therefore, if the properties of a public folder are changed by using Exchange System Manager and if these attributes are left empty, the updated Exchange System Manager will reapply the default settings.
  • Administrators can set the no limit value for a public folder by using the following steps.

Note We do not recommend that you use this method.
    1. Click to select the Use public store defaults check box, and then click Apply.
    2. Click to clear the Use public store defaults check box, and then click Apply again.
These steps will change the actual settings of the public folder. However, the steps cannot change the way that the settings are displayed.

Note The next time that Exchange System Manager is started and any other attribute of the public folder is changed, Exchange System Manager will restore the default settings, as described earlier in this section.
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Use the Pfdavadmin tool together with Exchange System Manager to monitor and to correct the properties of public folders.
  • Use the Pfdavadmin tool instead of Exchange System Manager to change the properties of public folders.
