INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services problem that is fixed in the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated November 25, 2004.

Problem that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following problem. This problem was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
  • When you use Microsoft Visual Studio to add a Web reference to a Windows SharePoint Services Web service, you receive an error message. You cannot add the Web reference. For example, when you try to add a Web reference to http://ServerName/sites/Site Name/_vti_bin/lists.asmx, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The document at the URL http://ServerName/sites/Site Name/_vti_bin/lists.asmx was not recognized as a known document type.
The error message from each known type may help you fix the problem:
    - Report from 'WSDL Document' is 'The document format is not recognized (the content type is 'text/html; charset=utf-8').'.
    - Report from 'DISCO Document' is 'There was an error downloading 'http://ServerName/sites/Site Name/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?disco'.'.
    - The request failed with the error message:

    [html][head][title]Object moved[/title][/head][body] [h2]Object moved to [a href='http://ServerName/sites/Site%20Name/_layouts/1033/error.aspx?ErrorText=File%20Not%20Found%2E']here[/a].[/h2] [/body][/html]

    - Report from 'XML Schema' is 'The document format is not recognized (the content type is 'text/html; charset=utf-8').
This problem occurs if the name of your Windows SharePoint Services Web contains one or more spaces. For example, you experience this problem if the name of your Web site is My Web Site, and the URL of your Web site uses %20 characters to represent each space as follows:
    http://ServerName/sites/My%20Web%20Site
