SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that has Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 installed. In Korn Shell or in C Shell, you try to use the ls command or the cd command in the root directory of the file system. In this scenario, you may receive the following error message when :
Permission Denied
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You use a Terminal Services session to connect to a remote Windows 2000-based computer that has Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) installed.
  • You use a non-administrator account to run the ls command or the cd command in Korn Shell or in C Shell from the Terminal Services session.
Note You do not experience this problem when one of the following conditions is true:
  • You use an account that is a member of the Administrators group to run the ls command or the cd command.
  • You run the ls command or the cd command from the console.
  • Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 is installed on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 installed on the computer.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer because the hotfix replaces the Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX (POSIX) subsystem.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix replaces the following hotfix:
892093  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892093/ ) Files appear as directories on a Linux server that is running Samba when you use the ls -l command in a Korn shell in Windows Services for UNIX 3.5
