FIX: You may receive a "Permission Denied" error message when you try to use the ls or cd command from a Terminal Services session

Consider the following scenario. You have a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that has Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 installed. In Korn Shell or in C Shell, you try to use the ls command or the cd command in the root directory of the file system. In this scenario, you may receive the following error message when :This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

• You use a Terminal Services session to connect to a remote Windows 2000-based computer that has Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) installed.
• You use a non-administrator account to run the ls command or the cd command in Korn Shell or in C Shell from the Terminal Services session.

Note You do not experience this problem when one of the following conditions is true:

• You use an account that is a member of the Administrators group to run the ls command or the cd command.
• You run the ls command or the cd command from the console.
• Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 is installed on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 installed on the computer.

You must restart the computer because the hotfix replaces the Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX (POSIX) subsystem.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
