CAUSE

This problem may occur when a user creates many deeply-nested subfolders in a mailbox folder. Because of the deeply-nested subfolder hierarchy, a very large number of recursion calls occurs when you try to move the folder or to remove the folder. This exceeds the maximum stack size in Exchange 2003. In this scenario, a stack overflow occurs, and the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service stops responding.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install the hotfix that is described in this article, you may still receive error messages when you try to work with the folders that are described in this article. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service does not crash.

The error messages that you may still receive after you install this hotfix are related to mail folders that contain many deeply-nested subfolders. The following are examples of such scenarios:

When you perform an advanced search in Outlook, you may receive the following error message:
Outlook cannot perform your search. Outlook cannot display this view. There is not enough memory available on the Microsoft Exchange Server computer to perform the action. Contact your system administrator.
This issue may occur when the size of the folder hierarchy is too large. This behavior is typical based on the size of the folder hierarchy. To prevent this error message, modify your search to include fewer folders.
In Outlook, when you try to empty a Deleted Items folder that contains many deeply-nested subfolders, you may receive the following error message:
Some items could not be deleted. They were either moved or already deleted, or access was denied.
