The installation log file may incorrectly list the "Install return code: 0" error when you install Office 2003 on a client computer

When you install Microsoft Office 2003 on a client computer, an exit code of 0 (zero) may be incorrectly returned by the Office 2003 Setup program. Additionally, the installation log file that is created by the Office 2003 Setup program may incorrectly list the following error:

This problem may occur when you use the enhanced version of the Office 2003 Setup program and when either of the following conditions is true:

• The Office 2003 Setup program cannot create the Local Installation Source files on the client computer, and the ENFORCECACHE property is enabled in the [CACHE] section of the Setup.ini file.
• You cancel the Office 2003 setup process before the Microsoft Windows Installer program (Msiexec.exe) has started.

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

After you install the hotfix that is mentioned in the "Resolution" section, the following correct exit codes are returned to the installation log file that is created by the Office 2003 Setup program:

• Exit code 2 is returned if the Local Installation Source files cannot be cached and if the ENFORCECACHE property is enabled.
• Exit code 16388 is returned if you cancel the Office 2003 setup process before the Windows Installer program has started.
