FIX: 17883 errors may be written to the SQL Server error log when you run a query that generates many floating point exception errors in SQL Server 2000Article ID: 892840 - View products that this article applies to. Bug #: 473639 (SQL Server 8.0) Bug #: 473673 (SQL Server 8.0) Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release. On This PageSUMMARYThis article describes the following about this hotfix
release:
SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft SQL Server 2000, when you run a query that
generates many floating point exception errors, you may experience slow
performance and query timeouts when you run other queries. This problem typically occurs when more than 1,000 floating point exceptions are
generated. Additionally, 17883 error reports that are similar to the following may be written to the SQL Server 2000 error log: Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0 Process 51:0 (dbc) UMS Context 0x018DA930 appears to be non-yielding on Scheduler 0. Server: Msg 3628, Level 16,
State 1, Line 2 A floating point exception occurred in the user process. Current transaction is canceled 810185

To work around this problem, modify the query so that the floating point exceptions do not occur. STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section. MORE INFORMATIONFloating point exception errors are typically handled
internally by SQL Server 2000 and the query runs as expected. When SQL Server
2000 handles these errors, no error is returned to the client. The errors will
appear in a profiler trace capture. When a thread does not yield the UMS, other threads cannot access CPU resources. If the handling of floating point exceptions takes longer than 60 seconds, a 17883 error is written to in the SQL Server error log.
