How to troubleshoot Office 2004 setup problems

PermissionsTo install software in the Applications folder or on the hard disk of a computer that is running Mac OS X, you must have administrator permissions. Alternatively, you can provide the administrator user name and password when you install the software.
The first account that is created on a computer typically has administrative permissions. However, if you are not sure whether your account has the required permissions, follow these steps:
Additionally, while you install your Microsoft product, you may receive an error message. The error message states that you do not have Read permission or Write permission to the folder where you want to install the software. When this error occurs, the installation CD may be dirty, scratched, or otherwise damaged. Sometimes you do not receive an error message, and the Microsoft Office folder is not created on the hard disk. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
This software is an upgrade to an earlier version of the software.
To continue installation, click Browse, and then select the folder that contains the earlier version of the software (Microsoft Office 2001 folder, for example). The folder can be located on either your computer or the CD-ROM from which you originally installed the earlier version of the software.

During the installation of Office 2004 for Mac, you have the option to import identities. If you used an earlier version of Office for Mac, and there is an identity in the /Users/user_name/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder, you can easily import that identity into Office 2004 for Mac.
