Symptoms

When you try to open an event log in Event Viewer on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, Event Viewer may stop responding. Additionally, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Access violation.

Cause

This problem occurs because a code error in Event Viewer does not correctly handle user names or domain names that are longer than 30 characters.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
