FIX: All the resource files are rebuilt when you rebuild a Visual C++ .NET 2003 project in Visual Studio .NET 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you rebuild a Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003 project that has resource files in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, all the resource files are rebuilt. The resource files are rebuilt even if the resource files were not changed. When you rebuild a project, you may receive messages that are similar to the following in the Visual Studio .NET 2003 compiler output:
Compiling resources...
Linking...

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the resource files contain an #include directive for a file name that does not exist on the computer where you rebuild the project.

For example, the resource files may contain code that is similar to the following lines of code.
#ifdef _WIN32
#include "windows.h"
#else
#include "youros.h"
#endif
In this example, if the youros.h file name does not exist on the computer where you rebuild the project, the rebuild causes the project to recompile and to link again.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio .NET 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
