You are prompted to type your user name and password before you can log on to Project Server 2003 if you connect from a computer that is outside the Active Directory domain

Consider the following scenario. Microsoft Office Project Server is configured to use Microsoft Windows authentication to authenticate user accounts. You connect to Project Server by using Microsoft Office Project Web Access from a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or 2008-based computer or from a Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7-based computer that is outside the Active Directory directory service domain. When you do this, a Connect to ServerName dialog box appears on the screen. You are prompted to type your user name and password before you can log on to Project Server.

This behavior occurs because you are logging on to Project Server from a non-trusted domain. Your user account in the non-trusted domain is different from the user account that you use to access the domain where the computer that is running Project Server is located. Therefore, you are prompted to type the user name and password that you use to access Project Server.

Use the Stored User Names and Passwords feature in Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows XP, or the 'Store credentials for automatic logon' feature in Windows vista, and Windows 7 to store the user name and password that you use to log on to Project Server on your computer. After you do this, the Connect to ServerName dialog box does not appear on the screen when you connect to Project Server by using Project Web Access from a computer that is outside the Active Directory domain.

To store a user name and password on your computer, use one of the following methods, depending on the operating system that your computer is running.

Windows Server 2003

1. Log on to the local computer as a member of the local Administrators group.
2. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Stored User Names and Passwords.
3. Click Add.
4. In the Logon Information Properties dialog box, follow these steps:
   1. In the Server box, type the name of the computer that is running Project Server 2003.
   2. In the User name and Password boxes, type the user name and password that you use to log on to Project Server 2003, and then click OK.
      
      Note Type your user name by using one of the following formats, depending on your situation:
      • DomainName\UserName
      • Workgroup\UserName
      • ComputerName\UserName
      • UserName@DomainName
      • UserName\WorkgroupName
      • UserName\ComputerName
   3. Click Close.
   
   
   

Windows Server 2008

1. Log on to the local computer as a member of the local Administrators group.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel Home, click User Accounts, and click User Accounts again.
4. Under Tasks, click Manager your network passwords.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Stored Credential Properties dialog box, follow these steps:
7. 1. In the Log on to: box, type the name of the computer that is running Project Server.
   2. In the User name and Password boxes, type the user name and password that you use to log on to the Project Server, and then click OK.
   3. In the Credential type section, leave A Windows logon credential selected. Note: Type your user name by using one of the following formates, depending on your situation:
   4. • DomainName \ UserName
      • Workgroup \ UserName
      • ComputerName \ UserName
      • UserName @ DomainName
      • UserName \ WorkgroupName
      • UserName \ ComputerName
   5. Click Close

Windows XP

1. Log on to the local computer as a member of the local Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Run, type control userpasswords in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Manage Passwords.
   
   Note The Advanced tab is only present if your computer is joined to a domain. If your computer is not joined to a domain, click the name of your user account, and then click Manage my network passwords under Related Tasks.
4. Click Add.
5. In the Logon Information Properties dialog box, follow these steps:
   1. In the Server box, type the name of the computer that is running Project Server 2003.
   2. In the User name and Password boxes, type the user name and password that you use to log on to Project Server 2003, and then click OK.
      
      Note Type your user name by using one of the following formats, depending on your situation:
      • DomainName\UserName
      • Workgroup\UserName
      • ComputerName\UserName
      • UserName@DomainName
      • UserName\WorkgroupName
      • UserName\ComputerName
   3. Click Close.
   
   

Windows Vista

1. Log on to the local computer as a memer of the local Administrators group.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel Home, click User Accounts, and click User Accounts again.
4. Under Tasks, click Manage your network passwords.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Stored Credential Properties dialog box, follow these steps:
7. 1. In the Log on to: box, type the name of the computer that is running Project Server.
   2. In the User name and Password boxes, type the user name and password that you use to log on to Project Server, and then click OK.
   3. In the Credential type section, leave A Windows logon credential selected. Note: Type your user name by using one of the following formats, depending on you situation:
   4. • DomainName \ UserName
      • Workgroup \ UserName
      • ComputerName \ UserName
      • UserName @ DomainName
      • UserName \ WorkgroupName
      • UserName \ ComputerName
   5. Click Close

Windows 7

1. Log on to the local computer as a member of the local Administrators group.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel Home, click User Accounts, and click User Accounts again.
4. Click Manage your credentials.
5. Click Add a Windows credential.
6. In the Type the address of the website or network location and your credentials page, follow these steps:
7. 1. In the Internet or network address box, type the name of the computer that is running Project Server.
   2. In the User Name and Password boxes, type the user name and password that you use to log on to the Project Server, and then click OK. Note: Type your user name by using one of the following formats, depending on your situation:
   3. • Domain \ UserName
      • Workgroup \ UserName
      • ComputerName \ UserName
      • UserName @ DomainName
      • UserName \ WorkgroupName
      • UserName \ ComputerName
      Click Close
