SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use a Microsoft Outlook Web Access client computer to add a new contact to a distribution list. Then, you use a Microsoft Outlook client computer to open this distribution list. In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:

Can't open this item. There is not enough memory available on the Microsoft Exchange Server computer to perform the operation. Contact your system administrator.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the size of the distribution list in Outlook Web Access exceeds the total size of the contacts that are stored in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. Exchange Server 2003 has a limit on the number of contacts that can be added to a distribution list. This limit is not fixed. Instead, this limit is based on the total size of the contacts that are stored in Exchange Server 2003. The Outlook Web Access client does not have a limit on the number of contacts that can be added to a distribution list. Therefore, if you use the Outlook Web Access client to add a contact to a distribution list, you may exceed the total size of the contacts that are stored in Exchange Server 2003.

After you install this hotfix, you have to create and configure the UseDLSizeLimitFromOutlook registry entry:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWEB\EXOLEDB
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Name the new registry entry "UseDLSizeLimitFromOutlook".
Right-click the UseDLSizeLimitFromOutlook registry entry, and then click Modify.
Under Base, click Decimal.
In the Value box, type 1, and then click OK.
Close Registry Editor.

Note When you try to add a new contact to the distribution list by using Outlook Web Access after you install this hotfix, Exchange Server 2003 uses the UseDLSizeLimitFromOutlook registry entry to examine the total size of the entry IDs of the contacts on a distribution list. When you set the UseDLSizeLimitFromOutlook registry entry to 1, the Outlook Web Access client uses a limit of 15000 bytes for a distribution list. This limit is the same limit that is used by the Outlook client.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this hotfix, Outlook Web Access uses the same method to calculate the size of a distribution list that Outlook uses. If you use Outlook Web Access to add a contact to a distribution list, you receive the following error message if the distribution list is close to the limit of the number of contacts that can be added to a distribution list:

The action can't be performed.
