SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Windows-based applications may not be notified of file creation, file deletion, or other file changes when these changes are made by using Server for Network File System (NFS). Server for NFS is included in Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5.

For example, you may experience the following symptoms when files are added, deleted, or changed when you are using Server for NFS:
  • Windows Explorer does not automatically update when the contents of a folder are updated. You can update the folder by manually refreshing the folder.
  • Services for Macintosh clients may experience folder contents that are not synchronized with Server for NFS. If you manually refresh the folder, the folder contents are not updated. To resolve this problem, you must restart the services. This action resynchronizes the folder contents.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows-based applications can register to receive notifications when the contents of a folder change. For example, Windows Explorer can automatically update the view of the contents of the folder when files are added, removed or changed.

Server for NFS does not support file change notifications. This behavior could cause applications not to stay synchronized with the actual folder contents.

This hotfix adds support for file change notifications. To enable this hotfix, you must add the following DWORD registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NfsSvr\Parameters\FCCompat
To do this, follow these steps:

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NfsSvr\Parameters\FCCompat
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type FCCompat, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click FCCompat, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type 1 to enable this hotfix, and then click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit.
Note After you complete these steps, you must restart the Server for NFS service.
