The progress bar stops responding at 0 percent when you click "Download and install" on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site

SYMPTOMS

You successfully access the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site, scan for available updates, and select updates to install. However, when you click Download and install, the progress bar never progresses and stops responding at 0 percent.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem in Microsoft Windows 98 or in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, follow these steps:
1.Connect to the Internet as indicated by your specific Internet Service Provider (ISP) service.
2.Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
3.In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Windows Update.
4.Delete temporary Internet files and cookies. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type inetcpl.cpl, and then click OK.
b. In Internet Properties, click the General tab.
c. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Cookies, and then click OK.
d. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, and then click OK.
5.Delete temporary Windows Installer files. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
b. In My Computer, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
c. In Folder Options, click the View tab.
d. Click to clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click OK.
e. In My Computer, double-click Local Disk (C:), and then double-click the WUTemp folder.
f. In WUTemp, click Edit, and then click Select All.
g. Press BACKSPACE.

If you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
6.Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
7.At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
regsvr32 msscript.ocx
regsvr32 dispex.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
8.Verify that JScript is correctly associated. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
b. In My Computer, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
c. In Folder Options, click File Types tab.
d. In the Registered File Types list, click the JS extension, and then click Advanced.
e. In Edit File Type, click Edit.
f. In the Application used to perform action box, type the following command, and then click OK two times:

C:\WINDOWS\System\WScript.exe "%1"%*
9.Install the latest scripting engine update. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
