This article describes the Word 2003 issues that are fixed in the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated March 28, 2005.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue:

895409 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895409/ ) When you try to move text or to extend a selection by using function keys, the functions do not perform as you expect in Word 2003

This hotfix package also fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

When you edit an enhanced metafile (EMF) image in Word 2003, the EMF image may become distorted or corrupted. Additionally, elements of the image may appear outside the borders of the image.
Consider the following scenario. You have a document that contains a table. The table has a paragraph style applied to the contents in the table. You insert the document directly under a table in a second document. The table in the second document has a character style applied to the contents in the table. After you insert the first document into the second document, the table in the first document no longer uses the paragraph style formatting.
When you try to open a document, to save a document, or to insert an object into a document, Word 2003 may temporarily stop responding. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
This issue occurs if all the following conditions are true:
- The computer's My Documents folder or Desktop folder resides on a network share.
- The network share is offline.
- You use a Word 2003 dialog box that displays a window that contains folders and files.

This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfix. To install this version of the hotfix, you must have Office 2003 SP1 installed.

The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed or on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed.

However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed than we have on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed, some file conflicts may occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend it.

Restart information

You do not have to restart the computer after you install this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix is replaced by a later hotfix.
