Description of the Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package: March 29, 2005

This article describes the Windows SharePoint Services issues that are fixed in the Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated March 29, 2005.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue:

• 896593  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896593/ ) After you migrate a user from a different Active Directory domain, the user can no longer access Windows SharePoint Services

This hotfix package also fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

• Users do not receive all the SMTP notification messages that they expect when they sign up for alerts in Windows SharePoint Services
  
  Consider the following scenario. Users sign up for the Windows SharePoint Services Alerts feature to track items in a Windows SharePoint Services Web site. After they sign up for alerts, the users may not receive all the e-mail notification messages that they expect when items in the Web site are updated.
  
  This problem occurs when Windows SharePoint Services incorrectly assigns the same message ID to e-mail messages that are sent to a particular user. In this scenario, if these SMTP messages are forwarded to a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server for delivery to the recipient, only the first message is delivered.
  
  Exchange is designed to help prevent the delivery of duplicate messages to a message recipient. If Exchange receives a message for a particular user, and the message has the same message ID value as a previous message, Exchange determines that the message is a duplicate. Therefore, Exchange does not deliver the second message.

Service pack information

This problem was first corrected in Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
