Article ID: 896425 - Last Review: June 1, 2006 - Revision: 1.5 FIX: The BULK INSERT statement silently skips insert attempts when the data value is NULL and the column is defined as NOT NULL for INT, SMALLINT, and BIGINT data types in SQL Server 2000
Bug #: 20000136 (SQL Server 8.0) Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release. On This PageArticle contentsSYMPTOMSIn Microsoft
SQL Server 2000, the Transact-SQL BULK INSERT statement silently skips insert attempts when the column is
defined as NOT NULL for an INT, SMALLINT, or BIGINT data type. This problem occurs when you run the BULK INSERT statement on a character-mode bulk import and when the data value is NULL for the NOT NULL integer-defined column. When the BULK INSERT statement runs, the row that contains the NULL column value is not added to the table, and the row is not counted against the maximum error (MAXERRORS) value. Note In a character-mode import file, a NULL value is represented as one or more SPACE characters (" "). RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
(http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.Prerequisites
Restart informationYou do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.Hotfix file informationThis hotfix contains only those files that are required to correct the issues that this article lists. problem, use one of the following methods:
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a
bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to"
section. MORE INFORMATIONThis hotfix updates
the BULK INSERT statement to detect NULL inserts for column data types INT,
SMALLINT, and BIGINT from a character mode import file. When a NULL insert
occurs, you will now receive an error message that is similar to the
following: Server: Msg 4869, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk Insert failed. Unexpected NULL value in data file row 3, column 1.
Destination column (ColA) is defined NOT NULL. The statement has been
terminated. Additionally, the BULK INSERT statement has been updated to match the behavior of the BCP utility when the statement parses signed integer data types that contain SPACE characters between the sign and the data value. For example, when you try to import the column value of "- 2", the BULK INSERT statement in versions earlier than this hotfix (8.00.1017) inserted a value of -2 and the BCP utility would flag a data conversion error. With this hotfix, the BULK INSERT statement behavior is now the same as the BCP utility behavior. Therefore, when you run the BULK INSERT statement on a column value of "- 2", you will now receive an error message that is similar to the following: Server: Msg 4864, Level 16,
State 1, Line 1 Bulk insert data conversion error (type mismatch) for row 6,
column 1 (ColA). 822499
