SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a .mpg or a .mpeg file in a Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation, the video does not play. Additionally, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message.

CAUSE

This issue may occur with a damaged or with an incompatible MPEG codec that is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download and install a new copy of the MPEG codec to your computer.

After you update the MPEG codec on your computer, you can use the Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility to determine whether an MPEG-2 video decoder (also called a DVD decoder) is installed on your Microsoft Windows XP computer.

Additionally, you can determine whether the decoder is compatible with Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 and with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition. For more information about the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
