The Remote Control notification feature in SMS 2003 automatically changes from “When session begins and ends” to “Repeated during session”

SYMPTOMS

You are using the Remote Control notification feature to provide audio notification in the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client. You enable Play a Sound notification and then try to select the When session begins and ends option. After you do this, the When session begins and ends option automatically changes to Repeated during session. The Play a Sound notification remains selected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an issue with machine policy XML data. In the CCM_RemoteToolsConfig class, the AudibleSignal parameter is defined as boolean. A boolean parameter can accept only a value of 0 or 1. In the registry, audible notification is defined by a value in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Client\Client Components\Remote Control\Audible Signal

Possible values are as follows:

0 = Off.
1 = On with sound repeated during the session.
2 = On with sound when the session starts and ends.

The registry subkey is updated to 1 when a machine policy is used.

This problem is scheduled to be fixed in SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Steps to reproduce the problem

In SMS Administrator, click Site Settings, click Client Agents, click Remote Tools Client Agent Properties, click the General tab, and then click Users cannot change policy or notification settings for SMS remote tools.
In SMS Administrator, click Site Settings, click Client Agents, click Remote Tools Client Agent Properties, click Notification, click Disable all setting, click Apply, and then click OK.
In the SMS Advanced Client, click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Systems Management.
Click the Actions tab, click Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle, click Initiate Action, click Remote Control Properties, click the Notification tab, and then make sure that all settings are disabled.
In SMS Administrator, click Site Settings, click Client Agents, click Remote Tools Client Agent Properties, click Notification, and then follow these steps:
1. Click to enable Display a visual indicator, and then select the Show indicator on desktop option.
2. Click to enable Show indicator when no session is active.
3. Click to enable Play a sound, select the When session begins and ends option, and then click Save all settings.
In the SMS Advanced Client, click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Systems Management.
Click the Actions tab, click to select Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle, click Initiate Action, click Remote Control Properties, and then click the Notification tab. The Repeated during session option is incorrectly selected.
