SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You click the Link to Outlook option in a Calendar or Events list on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services site. When you click Yes to confirm that you want to add the Windows SharePoint Services folder to Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you receive the following error message:
An error occurred adding the following Windows SharePoint Services folder to Outlook:

username - Events (http://SharePoint URL)

Outlook can't add the folder because creating a new Personal Folders (.pst) file isn't allowed on this computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the network administrator has added the DisablePST registry value to prevent users from creating or accessing Microsoft Outlook personal folder (.pst) files on the computer.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

This problem is corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Office 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install the service pack, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section to set the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook registry subkey and to activate the hotfix.

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Outlook 2003 post-Service Pack 1 Hotfix Package that is dated April 28, 2005. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the AlwaysAllowSharePointPST registry key and to activate the hotfix.

Note This hotfix only affects how you can create a new Windows SharePoint Services folder in Outlook 2003. If you already have an existing Windows SharePoint Services folder that has been added in Outlook 2003, this hotfix will not affect the Link to Outlook option.

To enable this hotfix, follow these steps:
1.Quit Outlook 2003.
2.Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook
4.After you click the subkey that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
5.Type AlwaysAllowSharePointPST, and then press ENTER.
6.Right-click AlwaysAllowSharePointPST, and then click Modify.
7.In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
8.On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
