This article lists the codecs that are included with Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and that are available for use by Microsoft Windows Media Player. The codecs for Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series are integrated with Windows XP SP2. The installation of Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 or Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime will automatically update the codecs that are used by the version of Windows Media Player that is on the computer.
Also included in this article is a list of codecs that are installed or are updated by Microsoft Windows Media Components.
Note Codecs that are only available through advanced Windows APIs such
as DirectPlay and TAPI are not listed in this
article.

codec is optimized for encoding sequential screen shots. For example, this
codec is frequently used to record screen shots of monitor images of software

compressed video. Two versions of this codec are the Windows Media Video 9 Image

Notes- Windows Media Player 10 is available as a feature of
Microsoft Windows XP.
- Codecs that are updated by Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime are included in Windows Media Player 10 and in the third-party products
that use the Windows Media Runtime format.
- Audio codecs that are updated by Microsoft Windows Media Format
9.5 SDK are included in Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.1.
- Video codecs in Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 SDK do not
update codec version numbers.
