FIX: A 17883 error may occur you run a query that uses a hash join in SQL Server 2000

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

When you run a query that uses a hash join in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, a 17883 error may occur. The following error message is logged in the SQL Server error log:
Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0 The Scheduler 0 appears to be hung. SPID 52, ECID 0, UMS Context 0x045530B8
Note This problem typically occurs on IA-64-based computers.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the SQL Server User Mode Scheduler (UMS) does not yield, and a 17883 message is raised.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and baseline hotfix 8.00.1007 installed on the computer.
