When you try to run the System File Checker tool (Sfc.exe) on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD. However, the System File Checker does not accept either the Windows XP SP2 CD or the original Windows XP CD.

Note You can install Windows XP SP2 either from the Windows XP SP2 CD or by downloading the SP2 files. To download the SP2 files, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

This problem occurs because the System File Checker must verify the SP2 files against the originally installed files. However, the System File Checker does not recognize the Windows XP SP2 CD or the Windows XP CD.

Method 2: Modify the registry to point to the Windows XP SP2 Setup files

Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. 1.	Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2.	Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
3.	In the right pane, right-click ServicePackSourcePath, click Modify, type %windir%\ServicePackFiles, and then click OK.

Steps to reproduce the problem

1.	Install Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).
2.	Install Windows XP SP2.
3.	Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
4.	At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER. You are prompted to insert the Windows XP SP2 CD.
5.	Insert the Windows XP SP2 CD or the Windows XP CD.
