SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to fix memory leaks that you are experiencing in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003:

The memory leaks that you are experiencing are caused by one of the following programs:
  • A custom MAPI program
  • A Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) program
After you install the hotfix, you may notice that the memory leaks have decreased. However, in this scenario, memory leaks still continue to occur when your custom program repeatedly calls the LoadLibrary and FreeLibrary functions to load and unload the Mapi32.dll file.

Note You can use the Performance snap-in to view the memory leaks in the Private Bytes counter of the program that is experiencing the memory leaks.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.
