SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0 and then reinstall an earlier version of Microsoft ActiveSync, you may experience unexpected external device connection and synchronization behavior.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Rapi.dll file and the Ceutil.dll file remain in the %Windir%\System32 folder when you uninstall ActiveSync 4.0. You must manually remove these files before you install an earlier version of ActiveSync.

To work around this problem, follow these steps to uninstall ActiveSync 4.0, and then install an earlier version of ActiveSync on the desktop computer:
  1. Uninstall ActiveSync 4.0.
  2. In File Explorer, navigate to the System32 folder in the Windows folder, and then manually delete the following files:
    • Rapi.dll
    • Ceutil.dll
  3. Install an earlier version of ActiveSync.
