Article ID: 902338 - Last Review: May 21, 2007 - Revision: 2.2 FIX: A Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) application that you create in Visual Studio .NET 2003 and that uses the CStringArray class and the CStringData class may unexpectedly close
On This PageSYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, you create a Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) application that uses the CStringArray class and the CStringData class. After the application runs for an extended period, the application may unexpectedly close (crash). When you examine the call stack information, you notice that the application unexpectedly closes when the MFC71u!ATL::CStringData::Release method is executed. CAUSEThis problem occurs because every time that you call the CStringArray::InsertAt method, the nRefs member is increased by 4. When the value of the nRefs member exceeds 2,147,483,647, the value of the nRefs member becomes negative. A negative value changes the way in which the CStringData class manages shared access. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio .NET 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
(http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.PrerequisitesTo apply this hotfix, you must have Visual Studio .NET 2003 installed on the computer.Restart requirementYou do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.File informationThe English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table.
