A DVD restarts from the beginning instead of resuming from where you last stopped the DVD in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

When you try to resume a DVD in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, the DVD restarts from the beginning instead of resuming from where you last stopped the DVD.

This problem may occur in either of the following scenarios.

• Scenario 1
  
  The following two conditions are true:
  • Parental controls are enabled for the DVD in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
  • You paused the DVD or switched to other content, such as Live TV in Media Center, and then tried to resume the DVD.
  (The parental control security feature on the DVD interferes with the bookmark feature that is used by Media Center.)
• Scenario 2
  
  You originally started the DVD by using the media notification dialog box that appears when you insert a DVD.
  
  For example, the problem may occur if you follow these steps:
  1. You insert a DVD into the DVD drive of the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer.
  2. You click Play DVD or Play DVD Video to start the DVD after you receive one of the following messages.
     
     Message 1
     Play DVD
     Message 2
     Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file:
     
     DVD Movie
     
     What do you want Windows to do?
     
     Play DVD Video
     using Media Center
     Note You receive Message 1 if you are running Media Center in full-screen mode. You receive Message 2 if you are running Media Center in Windowed mode or if Media Center is not running.
  3. When you are watching the DVD, you switch to other content, such as Live TV, in Media Center.
  4. When you are watching the other content, you perform one of the following steps to resume the DVD:
     • Click Play DVD in Media Center.
     • Press the DVD Menu button on the remote.
     • Press the green button on the remote.
     The DVD restarts at the beginning of the DVD instead of resuming from where you last stopped the DVD.

To work around the problem that is described in Scenario 2 of the "Cause" section, click Play DVD in the Media Center window to start the DVD. Do not use the media notification dialog box that appears when you insert a DVD. For example, follow these steps to work around this problem:

1. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive of the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer.
2. When the media notification dialog box appears, do not click Play DVD or Play DVD Video to start the DVD. Instead, start Media Center, and then click Play DVD on the Media Center menu.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
