When you try to insert a picture as a linked embedded object in an Office 2003 or 2007 Office program, the picture is not inserted

SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert a picture as a linked embedded object in one of the programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section, the picture is not inserted. Additionally, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
In Microsoft Office PowerPoint, you receive the following error message:
It isn't possible to create a link to drive:\path\filename.
In Microsoft Office Excel, in Microsoft Office Publisher, and in Microsoft Office Word, a package object is inserted in the document.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when there is no OLE server program installed on the computer. In earlier versions of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Photo Editor was installed as an OLE server program. An OLE server program is not installed by Office 2003 or by the 2007 Office system.

Method 1: Insert the picture as a linked picture

To insert a picture as a linked picture, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of Office that you are running.

Office 2003

1.Open the Office 2003 document.
2.On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
3.Select the picture that you want to insert.
4.Click the down arrow on the Insert button, and then click Link to File.

The 2007 Office system

1.Open the 2007 Office system document.
2.Click the Insert tab, and then click Picture.
3.Select the picture that you want to insert.
4.Click the down arrow on the Insert button, and then click Link to File.

Method 2: Install Microsoft Photo Editor

You can install Microsoft Photo Editor on the computer that is running Office 2003 from an earlier version of Microsoft Office, such as Microsoft Office 2000. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note Photo Editor is governed by the Product Lifecycle policy of the version of Office from which Photo Editor is installed.

To insert a picture as an embedded object in an earlier version of Microsoft PowerPoint, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of Office that you are running.

Office 2003

1.Open a presentation in PowerPoint.
2.On the Insert menu, click Object.
3.Click Create from file.
4.Click Browse to locate and to select the picture that you want to insert as an embedded object, and then click OK.
5.In the Insert Object dialog box, click to select the Link check box, and then click OK.

The 2007 Office system

1.Open a presentation in PowerPoint.
2.Click the Insert tab, and then click Object.
3.Click Create from file.
4.Click Browse to locate and to select the picture that you want to insert as an embedded object, and then click OK.
5.In the Insert Object dialog box, click to select the Link check box, and then click OK.
