Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. On a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you use a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) name to access a file over a Server Message Block (SMB) connection. However, as soon as you close the file, the SMB connection is also closed. You expect SMB connections to remain open for more than 10 minutes after they become idle.

Cause

By default in Windows 2000, idle connections are closed immediately.

Note To modify this default behavior, install the hotfix that is described in the "Resolution" section. Then, follow the steps at the bottom of the "Resolution" section.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

You must restart the computer after you apply the hotfix because you modify a core component.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you apply this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\parameters
  3. Right-click the right pane, and then click DWORD value.
  4. Change the name of the "New Value #1" element to KeepConn.
  5. Double-click KeepConn, and then type the value that you want in the Value data box. You can set the Value data setting to a value from 1 to 65535. If you use the maximum value, the connection remains dormant.
Note This hotfix does not change the default behavior by which idle connections are closed immediately. Instead, this hotfix enables the functionality of the KeepConn registry entry so that you can modify this behavior as required.
