SYMPTOMS

When you query the LastLogonUserName property on a Windows XP based-computer, the property is empty.

Note The LastLogonUserName property is stored in the Win32_ComputerSystem Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) class.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a program cannot query the Win32_ComputerSystem WMI class when the following conditions are true:
  • The account that queries the user name is running under any one of the following accounts:
    • Interactive user
    • Local Service
    • Network Service
    • Local System
  • The Terminal Services service is disabled.
Note Any program that queries for the user name may experience this problem. For example, scripts or a management tool such as Microsoft Systems Management Server may experience this problem.
