Installation options for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

You use the original release version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to scan for available updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site. You are not offered any updates. Only Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is offered.

The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site offer exclusive updates, such as service packs that may contain other updates.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Install Windows Server 2003 SP1 by using the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)

Install Windows Server 2003 SP1 by using the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Method 2: Hide Windows Server 2003 SP1 and see a list of other security updates

You may choose not to install the service pack for very specific reasons. If you are a corporate user who chooses not to install Windows Server 2003 SP1, follow these steps to hide the update and to see a list of other security updates that apply to the computer.

Important You must follow these steps if you do not intend to install the service pack.

1. Block Windows Server 2003 SP1 from being installed by using the Windows Server 2003 SP1 Blocker Tool Kit. To download the Windows Server 2003 SP1 Blocker Tool Kit, visit the following Web site:

2. Hide Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and scan for updates again. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then click Windows Update on the Tools menu.
   2. Click Custom, and then click Select and Install other updates.
   3. In the first section, expand Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
   4. Click to select the Don't show this update again check box.
      
      Note If the Don't show this update again check box is unavailable or dimmed, click to clear the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 check box. Then, click to select the Don't show this update again check box.
   5. Click Review and Install updates to save the setting.
   6. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Windows Update on the Tools menu.
      
      A list of the updates that are superseded by Windows Server 2003 SP1 appears.
   7. Click to select the updates that you want to install, and then click Review and Install updates.
   8. Click Install Updates, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
