This article describes Xbox LIVE account migration. This article also helps you migrate your original Xbox LIVE account to an Xbox 360 console.

You can "migrate," or move, an Xbox LIVE account from an original Xbox console to an Xbox 360 console. Doing this upgrades the functionality of your account by using features that exists only on Xbox 360. You cannot migrate your account by just moving the memory device from the Xbox console to the Xbox 360 console.

To migrate your account, follow these steps.
Note To use this procedure, the Internet connection must be configured correctly on the Xbox 360 console.
  1. If you are signed in to a profile, you must sign out before you can continue. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press the Xbox 360 Guide button.
    2. Press the X button on your Xbox 360 controller.
    3. Select Yes.
    4. Sign out.
  2. Press the Xbox 360 Guide button, and then select Recover Gamertag.
  3. Follow the directions that are displayed.
  4. When you are prompted for a Windows Live ID, you must create a new Windows Live ID. If you enter a Windows Live ID that was previously created and is not associated with your Xbox LIVE account, you will receive the following error message:
    This Windows Live ID is not associated with this gamertag.
    Notes
    • If your Xbox LIVE account is linked Microsoft Windows Live ID account, type your Windows Live ID user name and password.
    • If your Xbox LIVE Account is not linked to a Microsoft Windows Live ID, you must create a Windows Live ID through the Account recovery process to migrate your account. You cannot complete migration by entering an existing Windows Live ID. You must enter a new Windows Live ID through the account recovery process to migrate your account to Xbox 360.
    • Trial accounts cannot be migrated to Xbox 360.
    • Accounts that have outstanding billing issues cannot be migrated to Xbox 360.
