When attempting to enable Xbox LIVE on an offline profile, you receive the error message: "The e-mail address or password you entered is not valid"

When you try to upgrade your offline Gamertag to an Xbox LIVE Gamertag in your Xbox 360 gamer profile, you may receive the following error message:

This happens if you use an incorrect Windows Live ID e-mail address and password when you try to add Xbox LIVE to an Xbox 360 gamer profile. You must use the e-mail address and password that you use to sign in to other Windows Live ID Web sites.

You can use a new Windows Live ID to add Xbox LIVE to your Xbox 360 gamer profile. If your Windows Live ID is associated to a different gamer profile, you will have to use a different Windows Live ID to upgrade your gamer profile.Make sure that the Windows Live ID credentials that you use are the same ones that you used originally to sign in to Xbox LIVE. After you have confirmed that you are using the correct Windows Live ID, again try to upgrade your offline Gamertag in your Xbox 360 gamer profile.

If this does not work, you will have to reset your Windows Live ID credentials. Then, try again to upgrade your offline Gamertag in your Xbox 360 gamer profile. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Reset your Windows Live ID credentials.
   1. Visit the http://login.live.com (http://login.live.com) Web site, and then click Sign In.
   2. Click Forgot your password?, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reset your Windows Live ID credentials.
2. If you cannot reset your Windows Live ID credentials, you must instead create a new Windows Live ID account to associate with your Xbox 360 gamer profile. To create a new Windows Live ID, follow these steps:
   1. Visit the following Web site:
      http://account.live.com (http://account.live.com)
   2. Click Sign up for Windows Live.
   3. On the Windows Live Services page, click Sign up.
   4. In the Windows Live ID box, type a user name.
   5. To determine whether a user name is available, click the Check availability button.
   6. Type a password, and then retype the password.
      
      Password recommendations: Strong passwords contain 7 to 16 characters, do not include common words or names, and combine three of these character types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, or symbols.
   7. Enter an alternate e-mail address. If you add an existing e-mail address, password reset information can be sent to the alternate address if you forget your password.
   8. Select a Question, and then type the Secret answer.
      
      Secret answer options: The secret answer has a five-character minimum, and it is not case sensitive.
   9. In the Your information section, provide the requested information.
   10. Type the characters that you see in the picture.
   11. To review and accept the agreements, click I accept.
3. Use your reset or new Windows Live ID credentials to add Xbox LIVE to your Xbox 360 gamer profile.
