SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4 (SP4), a query that generates a very large query plan may not run. For example, the query may not run when you use the DELETE Transact-SQL statement and you try to delete records from a table that has FOREIGN KEY constraints on many tables. When this problem occurs, you may receive the following error message:
Server: Msg 8630, Level 17, State 34, Procedure <TableName>, Line nn
Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor encountered an unexpected error during execution.
Note This problem may not occur in SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3 (SP3).

CAUSE

This problem may occur because new checks were added to the SQL Server compiler after SQL Server build 2000.80.0929. The new checks make sure that the submitted query does not cause a stack overflow.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
