SYMPTOMS

When you perform a mail merge in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 or in Microsoft Publisher 2002 by using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as a data source, all the Zip+4 postal codes are converted to 0 (zero) in the output.

Additionally, performance may also be slow if the Excel data source contains many records.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Excel determines the type of data in a column by parsing the first eight rows of that column. When the type of data after the eighth row differs from the type of data in the first eight rows, Excel returns a value of 0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, move at least one of the records that have a Zip+4 postal code so that the record is in the first eight rows of the Excel spreadsheet. Then, perform the mail merge.
