When you try to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the installation process rolls back

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the installation process rolls back. Additionally, the Setup.exe process uses 100 percent of CPU resources.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the account that you use to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 does not have the Log on as a batch job user right and the Log on as a service user right.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Windows Settings, expand Security Settings, expand Local policies, and then click User Rights Assignment.
  3. Double-click Log on as a batch job, click Add user or group, type the name of the account that you use to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and then click OK two times.
  4. Double-click Log on as a service, click Add user or group, type the name of the account that you use to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and then click OK two times.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
