Screen freezes when you use your Xbox 360 console

Your Xbox 360 console stops responding (or “freezes”) when you try to play a disc or use the Xbox Dashboard. When this problem occurs, you do not receive an error message and the power button does not flash red on your console.

Solution 1: Inspect and clean your disc

If you’re trying to play a disc, take a close look at the back side of your game, movie, or music disc. Are there scratches? Excessive scratches or smudges can cause your Xbox 360 console to freeze.

Clean your disc

1. Hold the disc by the edges without touching the top or bottom surfaces.

2. Using a soft, clean cloth, gently wipe from the center of the disc outward.
   
   Note Do not use solvents to clean the disc.

3. Once the disc is clean, load the disc into your Xbox 360 console and see if your screen freezes again.

If your console still freezes, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Try another disc

Try another disc to determine whether the problem happens with any disc or only with a particular disc.

1. Find another disc of the same type: game disc, DVD, or CD. For example, if your screen freeze problem happens with a game disc, find another game disc.
2. Load the new disc into your Xbox 360 console.

3. Play the disc to see if your console freezes again.

If your console does not freeze with another disc of the same type, the specific disc you are using might be the source of the problem. Contact the disc manufacturer for a replacement disc or for troubleshooting help.

If your console still freezes, try the next solution.

Solution 3: Try another game

Try playing another game on your Xbox 360 console to determine whether your screen freezes with any game or only with a particular game.

1. Find another game on your hard drive or on disc.
2. Play the game and see if your console freezes.

If your console does not freeze when you play another game, the specific game you are playing or the game disc might be the source of the problem. Either re-download the game and try again or contact the disc manufacturer for a replacement disc or troubleshooting help.

If your console still freezes, try the next solution.

Solution 4: Does the problem only happen with Xbox LIVE?

Does your console only freeze when you play something on Xbox LIVE? Try playing offline content such as a game disc. If your screen only freezes when playing on Xbox LIVE, the problem might be related to your Internet connection.

Solution 5: Move your console

1. Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
2. Move your console to an open, well ventilated area, away from all other electronic devices.

Tips for positioning your Xbox 360 console:

• Don’t put your console inside an enclosed space. Put your console in an open area with lots of ventilation, such as a table or shelf.
• Don’t stack other devices on top of or below your console.
• Make sure your console and its power supply are on a hard surface. Don’t put your console on something soft like a bed, sofa, or rug.
• Keep your console away from heat sources such as ventilation openings on televisions and electronic devices. Also keep your console away from heating vents and direct sunlight.

Once your console is repositioned, turn on your console and see if it freezes again. If your console still freezes, please try the next solution. 

Solution 6: Clear your system cache

If your console is not freezing because of a particular disc or game, clearing the system cache might correct the problem.

Solution 7: Remove your hard drive

If your Xbox 360 console has a hard drive, the screen might be freezing because of a problem with the hard drive. To see if this is the problem, try removing the hard drive temporarily.

1. Turn off the console.
2. Remove the hard drive.

3. Turn on your console.
4. Try to reproduce the freeze problem.

If removing your hard drive resolves your screen freeze problem, contact Xbox Support for a replacement hard drive.
