INTRODUCTION

This article describes steps you can try if your Xbox 360 console does not turn on.

THINGS TO TRY

To troubleshoot this problem, try the following steps:
  1. Examine the power indicator light that is located in the center of the Ring Of Light on your Xbox 360 console. If there is no power to your console, the indicator light is off and the fans are off.
    • Press the power button. The power button and the power indicator light are located in the center of the Ring of Light on the front of your Xbox 360 console. If your Xbox is functioning correctly, the power will turn on.
    • Press the eject button on your console disc drive. If your console turns on when you do this but does not start when you use the power button, there may be a problem with the power button. Contact Xbox Customer Support for more help.
  2. If step 1 does not resolve the problem, examine the power cord where it connects to your console and to the power outlet. Disconnect and then reconnect the power cord at each end to make sure that you firmly connect the cord.

For more information about how to disconnect and reconnect the power cord, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  3. If this does not resolve the problem, see whether the power cord is plugged in to any device other than a typical power outlet. For example, the power cord may be attached to an extension cord. If this is the case, remove this device and then plug the power supply directly into a power outlet.
  4. If the problem is not a connection problem, examine the light on the Xbox 360 external power supply.
    • A green light indicates that the power supply is functioning correctly. If the light is green, contact Xbox Customer Support for more help.
    • If the power supply light is not green, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  5. If your Xbox 360 still does not turn on, verify that the outlet is working by testing other devices in the same outlet. If no other devices work, the outlet may not be working. Examine your circuit breaker, and then contact a licensed electrician for help.
  6. If the outlet is working but your Xbox 360 console does not turn on, remove the power supply power cord from the wall and from your Xbox 360 console. Examine the power cord that connects to your Xbox 360 console for damage.

Note To look for damage, visually examine the cord and use your hands to feel for damage. Make sure that the cord is disconnected on both ends before you do this.
  7. Make sure that there is no disc in the disc tray. For more information about how to manually eject a disc from the disk tray, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
