To configure the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows to play Halo: Combat Evolved, follow these steps.

Note You may want to print this article for use as an offline reference when you configure the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.
  1. Start Halo: Combat Evolved.
  2. Click SETTINGS, and then click GAMEPADS.
  3. In the CONTROLLER SETUP dialog box, make sure that XBOX 360 for Windows (Controller) is listed under DEVICES IN PROFILE.
    • If XBOX 360 for Windows (Controller) is not listed under DEVICES IN PROFILE or under AVAILABLE DEVICES, you must quit the game. Then, make sure that the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is set up correctly in Microsoft Windows. To verify that the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is set up correctly, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Game Controllers, and then make sure that XBOX 360 for Windows (Controller) is listed under Installed game controllers.

    • If XBOX 360 for Windows (Controller) is listed under AVAILABLE DEVICES, click XBOX 360 for Windows (Controller). Then, make sure that the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is listed under DEVICES IN PROFILE.
  4. Click OK to save the controller profile settings.
  5. To configure the controller in Halo: Combat Evolved, click CONTROLS SETUP.
  6. Click DEVICE until XBOX 360 for Windows (Controller) is displayed.

    Note You may have to click DEVICE more than one time, depending on the number of devices that are installed on the computer.
  7. Click CATEGORY to view the available commands and assignments. For example, the MOVEMENT category lists the commands and assignments that are related to the movement of the controller stick.

    Note To view the commands and assignments of a different category, click CATEGORY. For example, to view the commands and assignments that are related to combat, click CATEGORY until COMBAT is displayed on the right side.

    Use the following information to set assignments for each command. To set an assignment, click a command under CATEGORY, and then move, press, or pull the control on the controller device that corresponds to the DEVICE ACTIVITY for that command assignment.

    Notes
    • Some commands are intentionally left unassigned.
    • The Xbox Guide button is not assignable in this game.
    • Vibration Feedback is not supported.

After you configure the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, you can use the controller to play the game as the game is played on Xbox. If you want to customize the controller even more for your preferences, repeat steps 1 through 8 to customize assignments and commands.

You may also change the INVERT VERTICAL AXIS setting to change the behavior of the look up and look down commands. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Halo: Combat Evolved.
  2. Click SETTINGS, and then click MOUSE SETUP.
  3. The following options are available for INVERT VERTICAL AXIS:
    • YES
      This option reverses the Y-axis of the right stick so that pushing the right stick forward makes you look down and vice versa.
    • NO
      This option uses default settings. Pushing the right stick forward makes you look up. Pulling the right stick back makes you look down.
  4. Click OK two times.
